Appeal to find families of Manx ANZACs

Commemorative stamps feature Island's soldiers

Do you have a family member who emigrated to Australia or New Zealand?

Did they serve their country during the Great War of 1914?

Families of the 'Manx ANZACs' are being asked to come forward, as Isle of Man Stamps and Coins looks to find their surviving relatives.

A set of stamps to mark 100 years of commemoration is due to be launched on the 4th August, and it's hoped the families will attend.

They feature six of the Island's servicemen:

Private John Gell of the 4th Battalion 1st Australian Infantry. Fought at Gallipoli, died between 6th and 8th September 1915.

Private Thomas Sayle Corlett of the 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion. Fought in Belgium, died on 19th October 1917.

Lance Corporal George Roberts with Military Medal of the 7th Battalion Australian Infantry. Fought in France, died on 9th August 1918.

Lance Corporal Charles Stanley Nicholson of the New Zealand Machine Gun Corps. Fought in France, died on 15th September 1916.

Robert Joseph Caley of the 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion.

John Joseph Corteen of the 24th Battalion Australian Infantry.

Maxine Cannon of the Post Office, who has made the appeal, has located the family of John Corteen, who came back to the Island after surviving the Battle of the Somme.

If you have any information regarding these men, or other Manx ANZACs, please contact Maxine in confidence on 698435, or by emailing stamps@iompost.com.
