Archbishop Stephen discusses petition to remove Bishops from UK parliament

The Archbishop of York has defended the presence of the Bishop in Tynwald.

Most Reverend Stephen Cottrell visited the Island over the weekend -meeting and speaking with groups and organisations, including members of the Island's parliament.

Over in the UK an online petition, curated by TV broadcaster and writer Sandi Toksvig, asks for the removal of the 26 bishops who sit in the UK Parliament as the Lords Spiritual.

Later this year, Archbishop Stephen will be involved in choosing a successor for Bishop Peter Eagles, who recently announced his intention to stand down from his ministry as Bishop of Sodor and Man.

He told Manx Radio he feels Tynwald would lose a valuable perspective if future Bishops were prevented from sitting in court:
