That’s the question being posed by the Office of Fair Trading which has launched a consultation to gauge public opinion.
Last year, the Manx National Farmers' Union called for them to be made illegal after a cow died from swallowing lantern wire.
OFT chiefs say the Island fire service has also expressed significant concerns over public safety.
The government consultation will run until July the third.
