Benefit cheat ordered to repay the money he wrongly claimed

36-year-old didn't tell Treasury he was working

A Ballasalla man who claimed more than £1,000 in benefits he wasn’t entitled to has been ordered to repay the money.

Craig Phillip Teare, of Crossag Close, admitted four offences of making false representations to obtain the money in October and November 2021.

The 36-year-old was claiming Income Support and Incapacity Benefit despite working; it resulted in an overpayment of £1,057.39.

He also admitted stealing six fragrances from Boots, on Strand Street in Douglas, on 1 July last year valued at £428; an offence committed whilst he was the subject of a suspended sentence.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse Magistrates imposed a two-year probation order, to run concurrently with the suspended sentence, and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £200.

Teare must also pay compensation to Treasury and Boots.
