Ben's delay causes big traffic problems

DoI and Steam Packet apologise

Major traffic issues in Douglas this morning have resulted in an apology for commuters from the Department of Infrastructure and the Steam Packet.

Calls into Manx Radio told of tailbacks from the Sea Terminal to at least the Sefton hotel on the promenade, while the area around the roundabout at Lord Street was gridlocked also.

The  DoI says the problems around the Sea Terminal this morning were the result of a number of factors.

The Ben-my-Chree's arrival in Douglas was delayed by the weather, and the vessel was extremely busy with both inbound and outbound bookings after yesterday's cancellations.

Delays in loading caused by the late arrival meant that the car check-in lanes could not be opened until 7.45am, by which time queues had built up on roads around the Sea Terminal.

The DoI says it will be working with the Steam Packet to review the interim and permanent arrangements for vehicle check-in at times of very busy sailings.
