Brexiteer businessman under UK scrutiny

Offshore donor gave millions to Leave campaign

A prominent Island businessman is being investigated over claims he broke rules on donations in the run-up last year's Brexit referendum.

Arron Banks is a key shareholder in the Manx Financial Group, as well as owning stakes in more than a dozen companies based offshore.

He's more widely known for giving almost £9 million from his own pocket to the Leave.EU campaign.

It's been called the biggest ever donation in British politics.

Now the UK Electoral Commission is looking into whether Mr Banks' company Better for the Country Ltd - incorporated through an Island-based corporate service provider - was the true source of the funding.

The Commission says there are 'questions over the legitimacy' of where money originated from.

But Mr Banks appears unfazed by the allegations - this morning sarcastically tweeting he was 'terrified'.
