Fines up to £5,000 for driving carelessly

This week marks Road Safety Week and each day the constabulary is highlighting the fatal five causes of incidents or serious collisions on the roads.

Today (18 November), careless driving is the focus with police warning anyone caught can face a fine up to £5,000 and have 3-9 penalty points.

Overtaking on the inside, driving too close to another vehicle and short distractions such as eating, drinking or glancing at your phone are just some examples of how a driver can lose focus on the road.

Police say even a brief lapse in concentration can cause a serious or fatal collision.
