Bus crash in south declared major incident

LAST UPDATED: 9.37pm

Investigations are underway this evening (5 Oct) into a serious road accident involving a bus and car south of Castletown.

Numbers of casualties 'in double figures' according to police, were rushed to Noble's Hospital after the crash at Ballakaighan Corner on the Southern 100 course, some understood to have suffered severe injuries.

A single decker No 2 bus and saloon car were involved.

Ambulance and fire crews arrived at the scene shortly after 3.30pm and sealed the area off.

The stretch of road from Fisher's Hill, Castletown at its junction with the by-pass  through to Shore Road at its junction with Kentraugh back road, remained closed until shortly before 9.30pm.

Earlier, members of the public were asked not to go to Noble's Hospital unless in an absolute emergency, but the Department of Health has since confirmed the Accident and Emergency unit has resumed normal service, although waiting times may be longer than usual.

A number's been issued for anyone concerned about people travelling on that route to call: 01624 679315.

Traffic is being diverted around the scene, via Great Meadow, Cross Four Ways and Ballabeg.

The crash and aftermath have been declared a major incident by police.
