By-election trial begins

A jury’s been told four Island residents attempted to win an election for celebrity chef Kevin Woodford by ‘cheating’.

The allegation came as the prosecution opened its case in the Douglas East by-election fraud trial this afternoon (Tuesday).

Cairns Nelson QC suggested the defendants were involved in ‘dishonest attempts’ to manipulate voting proceedings and secure proxy votes.

Fifty two-year-old Geoffrey Callister of Port Erin, 40 year-old Gail Corrin, 26 year-old Catherine Liggins of Onchan and 25 year-old Kerry Rothwell of Onchan all deny charges relating to voting irregularities in the May 2010 by-election.
