Call to honour unknown dead of maritime disaster

100th anniversary of sinking of RMS Leinster on Wednesday

A local historian says he'd like to see something done to honour the unknown victims of a major maritime disaster.

Wednesday this week is the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Leinster, which sank in the Irish Sea after being torpedoed by a German U-boat.

Hundreds of people, both service personnel and civilians, were killed, with many bodies washing up on Manx shores.

Some were repatriated, and some were buried in marked graves here, but many could not be identified.

Ivor Ramsden of the Manx Aviation and Military Museum is suggesting a plaque could be put up.
