Calls for government to update PCR test rules for travel

UK change could see returning residents pay for multiple tests

There are calls for government to update recently-imposed travel rules which could see returning travellers taking multiple PCR Covid tests within days.

The current rules mean those returning from outside the Common Travel Area (UK, Ireland, Jersey & Guernsey) need to pay £30 for a test at the Grandstand within 48 hours and isolate until they receive a negative result.

However, on Tuesday the UK introduced mandatory pre-flight tests for any overseas visitors.

Manx resident Randi Anne Lunde Quine plans to visit family in Norway this Christmas but will now need to pay for multiple tests:

People returning from inside the CTA meanwhile need to take a free lateral flow test.

'There's no point in complaining about the various regulations - we just have to accept it.'

Mike Bathgate, a director of TravelWatch, says people on the Isle of Man must accept Covid testing rules across the world whilst there's uncertainty around travel.

He says he has sympathy with the travel industry after the emergence of the Omicron variant led to increased restrictions.

But he believes testing rules for individual nations are in place for a reason:

In response, government says: 'There are no plans for any changes currently, but our position is kept under constant review.'
