Cannan attacks means testing for tuition fees

Michael MHK Alf Cannan has criticised govenrment plans to means-test high income earners over university tuition fees as 'discriminatory' and says the policy could have serious consequences for the Manx economy.

The Department of Education wants to charge all students £2,500 a year towards their fees from 2014.

Those whose parents earn more than £100,000 per year before tax will be asked to pay more, up to the full annual fees level of £9000 per annum.

Alf Cannan will quiz the Treasury Minister Eddie Teare on the issue in the House of Keys next Tuesday.

Mr Cannan says the move could impact jobs if local business owners either adjust their own financial position or simply leave the Island.

He says whatever is brought in needs to be fair to all and argues this proposal simply isn't:
