Celtic League's homophobia concern

Call to challenge discrimination

The Celtic League says proposed plans for same-sex marriages on the Island could lead to homophobic attitudes being expressed more in the coming months.

Its comments come in the week the chief minister openly discussed his sexuality in an article in the Guardian newspaper.

The league says while this has been generally welcomed, a few comments on some websites seem to indicate the old bigotry towards gay people still exists.

Celtic league Director of Information Bernard Moffatt says some ‘so-called’ political opponents scarcely conceal a veneer of homophobia.

He adds that with the church stirring up opposition to plans for legislation on gay marriage it looks as if homophobes may once again dare to "venture out of the dark place in which they have been hiding since the persecution of gay people in Mann a quarter of a century ago ended."

He adds that in the coming months it's important groups and individuals who oppose bigotry and support tolerance are vigilant and challenge discrimination.
