Chester Street Shoprite "was not sustainable"

Facility to close imminently

The Chief Executive of Isle of Man Enterprises says trading at the Chester Street Shoprite store was no longer sustainable.

It was announced this morning (Tues) that the store is to close at the end of business on Saturday.

Andrew Thomas says there has been little "proactive investment" in the fabric of the centre, the car park and the wider centre during the time that they have held the lease.

The building is owned by the Department of Infrastructure.

In a statement this morning, Mr Thomas went on to reference a "backdrop of declining demand in Douglas, poor neighbourhood standards, dramatically shifting industry trends and the planned disruption to the Promenade.”

Mr Thompson has thanked all the staff for their hard work over the years and says they will all be offered redeployment elsewhere in the business or in one of their other ten Island stores.

The Subway store will be re-located.

Manx Radio has asked for an interview with Mr Thomas and is awaiting a reply.
