Chief minister proposes issuing new MiCards to those who can't open bank accounts

Chief minister puts forward amendment in Tynwald

The chief minister has put forward a proposal that would allow MiCard users who can't access a bank account to continue using the service from January.

Alfred Cannan tabled an amendment in Tynwald this morning suggesting new cards will be issued on 1 January to those who are unable to open basic or regular bank accounts.

Government had previously planned to stop offering the service, which allows those claiming benefits and pensions to withdraw their payments in cash.

Following concerns that this would leave vulnerable users without a bank account able access to their money, Mr Cannan put forward a plan:
