Onchan and Ramsey representatives clash over online comments

An MHK has criticised one of his House of Keys colleagues over his choice of language online.

In a social media post earlier this month, Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper made reference to some Tynwald members being 'clowns'.

Onchan representative Rob Callister says the remark falls below the standards expected of elected representatives:

The disagreement can be traced back to a post from Infrastructure Minister and MHK for Rushen Michelle Haywood who called out abusive comments directed towards her online.

In a statement on her constituency account, she said she would be 'happy to discuss any matter in a calm and respectful way'.

But added: "If you come onto my posts to make allegations about ulterior motives, cast aspersions on my character, post clown emojis or to disparage me in any way, then I will hide your comments or turn off comments on that post off."

In response to an article written about the minister's statement, Mr Hooper said: "If only we could remove the clowns from Tynwald too…"

This didn't sit well with Onchan MHK Rob Callister, who's been speaking to Manx Radio's Phil Gawne:

Manx Radio offered Lawrie Hooper the chance to respond to Mr Callister's comments - the opportunity was declined.

The Ramsey MHK has already given his say online though, saying the clown comment was 'light-hearted' and was a reference to previous headlines.

While acknowledging that he'd 'ruffled some feathers' he said the 'clowns' comment reflects "quite a lot of commentary and sentiment I've had from people over the Christmas period" - highlighting statistics which show general dissatisfaction with government.

Manx Radio has also approached the Isle of Man Government for comment.
