Community service for man who urinated in police van

Advocate urges court to keep offender’s ‘idle hands’ busy

A Douglas man has been ordered to carry out 140 hours of community service after urinating in a police van.

Christopher James Christian made no effort to let officers know he needed the toilet after his arrest on 20 August.

Police were called to his address, on Sumark Croft, at 2am due to an ‘ongoing disturbance’ – they found Christian heavily intoxicated and lying on the street.

During the journey to Police Headquarters the 37-year-old urinated – an act which caused damage to the van and to an officer’s kit bag located within it.

At Douglas Courthouse this week Christian admitted two offences of damaging property and one of being drunk in public.

Asking for additional community service hours to be added to a sentence Christian’s already serving -for unrelated matters – his advocate said: “Every day routine will mean he’ll be a lot more stable.”

She urged the court to ‘keep him busy’ which would stop his ‘idle hands’ adding: “One of the issues is he doesn’t have enough routine and enough to fill his time.”

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also ordered Christian to pay £188.99 in compensation to the Department of Home Affairs and the police officer and £125 in prosecution costs.
