Concern for local producers after Shoprite sale

Tesco supply chain 'very difficult to get into'

There are questions about the impact the sale of Shoprite to Tesco will have on local producers.

Shoprite currently stocks a wide range of Manx produce, something it's feared won't continue following the takeover.

The UK supermarket does stock products from Isle of Man Meats and Isle of Man Creamery.

But, Chief Minister Alfred Cannan admits it's 'very difficult' to get into the Tesco supply chain:

Ice cream manufacturers, Davison's, says the move "isn’t particularly good news for the Isle of Man food producers."

It's calling on government to look into the possibility of an agreement with Tesco.

Meanwhile, Robinson's Fresh Foods has put out a call for local suppliers to approach them with ideas and products.

The Isle of Man Chamber of Commerce President Kristan McDonald said: “For generations the owners, management team and staff at Shoprite have been at the heart of the Island’s community. During that time the business has been a major employer, and supported the local economy by choosing to partner with many on-Island suppliers and service providers – so we understand why this news is of great concern to the business and wider community."

"As always, Chamber is here to offer whatever support we can to members – including Shoprite and the company’s suppliers – who are affected by this news. Looking ahead, we welcome the new owners’ long-term commitment to operate the nine stores under the Tesco brand – and to support the local food and drink sector. Chamber is keen to see partnerships with IOM businesses continue as Tesco moves forward.”
