Convicted MLC to stay in post

Politician resigns from health and social care

Tony Wild is to remain a member of the Legislative Council.

He has made a personal statement to Tynwald this morning (15 March) following his conviction for drink driving.

Last month, he received a five year driving ban and sentenced to 180 hours community service after being arrested in Laxey in December 2015 whilst more than three times over the legal limit.

Mr Wild is to step down immediately as a departmental member of Health and Social Care but says he has a strong desire to continue as an MLC.

He today apologised to the people of the Isle of Man:

Mr Wild also referred to medical conditions which were mentioned in court.

He did not elaborate in his statement but said they are under control and he has the necessary support.

When he was sentenced, the court heard Wild admit he'd been struggling with mental health problems and was ‘self-medicating’ with alcohol, for which he’d since received treatment in the UK.
