Councillor pushes for return of Derby Square mast

'Iconic' structure removed in October

A Douglas councillor wants an 'iconic' mast in the middle of Derby Square to be re-installed as a matter of urgent business.

The structure matched the height of surrounding trees and featured a weathervane on top, but was removed in October due to its unsafe condition.

Derby Ward member Elizabeth Quirk wants it returned as soon as possible.

Regeneration Committee Chairman Stephen Pitts said the mast will 'hopefully be put back up', however, could not give any assurances.

Mrs Quirk told the council chamber: "It's an iconic, historic mast. What is happening with it?

"It's important to the residents of Derby Square. The word 'hopefully' doesn't mean anything to me at all.

"This is of urgent business to the people of the square."

Mr Pitts replied: "A full agenda will come next month for what we can do and what we can't do [with the mast].

"Hopefully it will go back up."
