Couple's 90+ years as 'Listening Sams'

Island pair devoted to charity's work

A Douglas couple who've jointly clocked up 90 years with The Samaritans say they'll continue being on duty as long as they're needed.

Sylvia and Les Lawrinson are the longest-serving volunteers at the  Island branch of the listening charity, established in the early 1970s.

They're part of a duty rota which ensures call centres around the UK are open 24/7, every day of the year.

When the couple started, they dealt with phone calls and personal visits. Now, much contact with those who need comfort in difficult times, is via email.

But the pair say the essence of the role has not changed:

If you're interested in volunteering call 251505 or email Samaritans@manx.net

The next recruitment night for volunteers is on 6 September.
