Court hears man 'determined' to kick heroin habit

Community service order for possessing small amount of the drug

A man’s been ordered to do community service after being caught in possession of a small amount of heroin.

Thirty-year-old Karl Allen Cameron, of Cronk y Berry in Douglas, appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse.

He admitted possessing 0.8 grammes of the class A drug when he was arrested on 27 June.

But the hearing was told Cameron had gone cold turkey while on remand at the Isle of Man prison and wanted to remain drug-free in future.

Defence advocate David Clegg said his client had already found work, and was determined to beat his addiction.

He said although Cameron had a criminal record, his last conviction for drug offences was in 2008 when he'd been charged with possessing cannabis.

And he added Cameron had spent three weeks on remand productively, engaging with the Drug and Alcohol Team to overcome his drug habit.

Mrs Hughes said he'd taken some positive steps in his life and ordered him to do 100 hours community service as well as paying £125 costs.
