Crime rises by 18 per cent in year 'like no other'

Chief constable releases annual report

Crime on the Isle of Man has risen by 18 per cent in the last year. 

Assaults on police officers have also increased and the number of people caught carrying weapons has jumped by 75 per cent.  

The figures have been revealed as part of the chief constable's annual report which will go before Tynwald next month.  

Gary Roberts has described the 2020-2021 period as a year 'like no other' saying the challenges faced during the health emergency are 'truly unique in scope and nature'.  

The increase in the overall crime rate has been largely attributed to a spike in drug seizures whilst the Island's borders were closed due to Covid-19.

There were 56 offences recorded where police found people to be in possession of an offensive weapon.  

Mr Roberts says this increase is largely attributed to some young people choosing to carry knives.
