'Crisis' warning over GP recruitment

Royal College of GPs head assesses morale

The head of the professional body for GPs has warned the Island is facing a looming recruitment crisis.

Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners in the UK Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard spoke to doctors from GP surgeries around the Island yesterday (14 March).

She said much more could be done to attract new GPs to practice in the Island, suggesting a high-profile marketing drive in the UK and beyond.

Professor Stokes-Lampard said the situation was precarious, as many newly-qualified GPs are currently not choosing to practice in rural areas.

During her visit she heard concerns about growing patient lists and primary care funding.

So what impression had gained about morale among Manx GPs?
