Damage to nature reserve caused by vehicle 'spinning at high speed'

Warning from government after incident at Ayres

Damage has been caused to the Ayres National Nature Reserve by somebody 'driving dangerously' and spinning their vehicle at high speed.

Government has issued a warning, saying the reserve is one of the island's most biodiverse areas, and anyone using it must follow the area's byelaws or face fines of up to £5,000.

DEFA Minister Clare Barber says: ‘The reserve is a special place for wildlife with rare habitats and associated species. Unfortunately, recent damage has removed all vegetation, exposing loose sand and harming the wildlife.'

Images posted on the Isle of Man Government Facebook page shows the damage caused by donuts.

The Ayres National Nature Reserve is an Area of Special Scientific Interest and walkers are encouraged to be aware of the birds and plants in the area. Dogs have to be kept on leads during the bird nesting season (1 April - 31 July).

Anyone with information about the recent damage is asked to contact defa@gov.im.
