Questions taken on building's future ahead of vote this afternoon

Tynwald members will be deciding whether or not Manx National Heritage can sell the Old Police Station in Castletown later (21 April).

The Baillie Scott building, which has been empty since 2017, is described as being both of historic and architectural importance.

It's been owned by the Manx Museum and National Trust since 2018, with hopes of being able to find a tenant.

After eight years, that's not been possible, and MNH is now looking to sell the site.

It has been the subject of several questions in this morning, ahead of a full debate and vote due to be held this afternoon.

Earlier, the environment, food and agriculture minister was asked by Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse what protections are in place to protect it if a potential buyer wanted to undergo extensive works.

Clare Barber says there's a 'robust framework' in place to keep the registered building safe, which would remain the case:

Questions this morning from Mr Moorhouse on the topic have included:

  • When the Old Police Station in Castletown was last valued; and what process was followed before submitting a motion to the April 2026 sitting of Tynwald seeking approval in principle to its sale.
  • What actions will be taken to preserve the integrity and uniqueness of the Old Police Station in Castletown if it is sold.
  • What consideration her Department gave to the creation of a police museum at the Old Police Station in Castletown a) before selling the building to Manx National Heritage and b) since that sale.

You can listen to today's sitting live on Manx Radio's AM1368 frequency, online or on smart devices.
