DEFA 'increasingly concerned' about risk of wildfires

Plea for no barbeques, campfires or stoves in public

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture and the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service say they are becoming "increasingly concerned about the heightened risk of wildfire in the uplands, woodlands and glens."

In a post on social media, DEFA reemphasised government's message that there should not be any barbeques, campfires or stoves outside of private gardens, under Covid-19 restrictions.

It added that cigarettes should not be disposed of anywhere in the countryside.

Vegetation is tinder dry already, the department says, and with no rain forecast in the short term, the risk of wildfire continues to increase.

All wildfires create problems, but the upland heathlands are particularly vulnerable due to their scale and fuel load.

The department added that Covid-19 affects the respiratory system, and any additional smoke in the environment may exacerbate the symptoms of those suffering form the virus.
