Diesel-electric loco arrives

The Island’s newest locomotive has arrived, but will need testing before it goes into service.

Isle of Man Railways’ new diesel-electric arrived in Douglas earlier today after the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure bought it for £400,000.

The reconditioned 42.5 ton engine, was craned onto the steam railway at Banks Circus and is the first new locomotive to be brought to the Island since 1926.

As well as pulling passenger trains – particularly during TT – the loco will also serve as a fire train when blazes break out at the side of the tracks.
