Co-operation and swift action save diver

Hyperbaric chamber offers antidote

A rapid response by the emergency services, lifeboat and coastguard crews and the hyperbaric chamber saved a local diver's life this week.

The man, diving to a wreck off the west coast of the Island, became unwell with decompression sickness when he returned to the boat.

He was given oxygen by members of his group, who raised the alarm and were met by coastguard and lifeboat volunteers in Port Erin.

They evacuated him from the boat into an ambulance.

The man was given emergency treatment overnight for the 'bends' at the hyperbaric chamber in Douglas - and is making a good recovery.
