Don't burn rubbish in warm weather

Police stamp out backyard bonfire

Police had to intervene after a homeowner tried to torch a pile of garden waste.

Officers were made aware of attempts to light a bonfire outside a property in the north of the Island yesterday.

It is not against the law to burn rubbish - but police say they had to talk the individual out of doing it as the fire could easily have got out of control.

Numerous warnings have been issued about wildfires as the hot weather continues.

Last Saturday, DEFA enforced a ban on flammables in woodland areas to reduce the risk to wildlife and the public.
