Douglas burglar was almost caught red-handed by homeowner

45-year-old will be sentenced next year

A Douglas man who burgled a property in the early hours of the morning, whilst the occupants were sleeping, will be sentenced next year.

John Alan Johnson, of James Street, was almost caught red handed whilst he was prowling around the couple’s home on Stevenson Court on 23 November.

At Douglas Courthouse yesterday (30 November) the 45-year-old admitted burglary and possessing cannabis.

The court heard the female resident had disturbed Johnson, at around 5am, after getting up to use the toilet; she could hear noises and saw a shadowy figure moving around.

After waking her partner the pair discovered furniture had been disturbed; there was cash missing from a purse and medicinal cannabis, and an Amazon Firestick, had also been taken.

The back door in the kitchen was open and an Xbox was found lying on the ground outside; the woman’s car had also been rummaged through, and left insecure, and her car keys had been taken.

Doorbell camera footage from properties in the area showed Johnson, who was carrying two plastic bags, trying door handles; police arrested him at his home later that morning and recovered 11 grams of cannabis.

A social enquiry report has been requested before Johnson is sentenced at the Court of General Gaol Delivery; he’ll next appear before that court on 5 January.

There was no application for bail and he’s been remanded at the Isle of Man Prison.
