Local authority says it's waiting for the promenade sea wall to be extended
Douglas Council says it is planning to install a temporary play area in the Marine Gardens whilst it waits for an extension of the new sea defence wall on the promenade.
The local authority agreed to halt its £1.4m refurbishment scheme because the Department of Infrastructure's sea wall doesn't cover the sunken gardens.
It says it would be 'premature' and 'financially irresponsible' to go ahead with the project without certainty for the long-term protection of the area.
The council says it will be applying for planning permission for the temporary play equipment as well as new railings.
Leader of the Council Devon Watson said: "While we continue to work towards the long-term regeneration of the Marine Gardens and await talks with the department, we don't want this prominent promenade site to remain underused.
"Children are young only for so long, they don’t have time to wait for negotiations between local and central government about the outcome of a plan. It’s essential families have high-quality play facilities in the heart of the capital in the meantime.
"A temporary play area will provide a significant family-focused attraction, complement the recently refurbished kiosk and surrounding public space, and encourage outdoor activity.
"Importantly, this represents a sensible investment for the city. It will remain a long-term council asset and can be relocated to another park or open space when permanent redevelopment of Marine Garden No.4 is able to move forward, ensuring it continues to benefit residents and visitors for many years to come."
