Douglas man fined £1,000 after assaulting PC in 'ugly scene'

31-year-old changes pleas before trial

A Douglas man who caused an ‘ugly scene’ on the day of a family funeral has been fined £1,000.

Daniel Robert Quinney Thirlwell, of Church Road Marina, admitted assaulting and resisting a police officer and being drunk and disorderly during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

The 31-year-old tried to intervene during an arrest which was taking place at 11.25pm on Douglas Road in Ballasalla on 8 July.

He was told to ‘back off’ but became agitated and pushed the PC in his chest – he was also said to be baring his teeth in an aggressive manner and shouting.

As he was being arrested he struck his elbow into the chest of one of the officers and swung a clenched fist towards an officer’s face missing by millimetres.

Officers had to use PAVA incapacitant spray and a baton to subdue him.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse Thirlwell’s advocate told the court his client had been to a funeral earlier in the day and was ‘overly emotional’.

“He accepts that, out of frustration, he has acted in the way he has done,” he added.

Fining Thirlwell, and ordering him to pay £500 in prosecution costs, Magistrates told him it was ‘quite an ugly scene on a main road in the Isle of Man.’
