Douglas man fined for assaulting girlfriend

Grabbed woman's throat twice during row

A court’s heard how a man put his hands around his girlfriend’s throat as if to strangle her, after accusing her of cheating on him.

Forty-four-year-old Michael Joseph Powell of Belmont Terrace in Douglas pleaded guilty to assault when he appeared at Douglas Courthouse.

Prosecution advocate Roger Kane told the hearing Powell was at his partner’s home on 23 March and had been drinking.

Neighbours called police when they heard a disturbance and screaming following an argument that evening.

The court heard Powell had become aggressive and verbally abusive and a row broke out between the couple.

During a scuffle, he’d grabbed her throat twice and both fell to the ground before he left the house.

Defence advocate Darren Taubitz told the court Powell was embarrassed and ashamed and had lost his good character.

Powell was fined £500 and ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.
