Douglas MHK wants all-Island rate to replace 'outdated system'

Plans to base rates on property size agreed by Tynwald in 2019

A Douglas MHK is calling for an all-Island rate to be introduced to replace the current system.

Paul Quine says basing the tax on the historic rental value of a home is outdated, and wants it to be judged on property size instead.

Those in his constituency are facing a 1.6 per cent increase in rates come April, with Douglas Council blaming 'significant losses' caused by Covid-19.

Mr Quine says it's not right that some are paying vastly different amounts:

Manx Radio has asked government for an update on plans to base rates on property size, which was agreed to by Tynwald in 2019, and set to be introduced next year.
