Capital joins Peel in making jubilee bid
Douglas Borough Council has backed plans to apply for city status for the capital.
Local authorities in crown dependencies, and overseas territories, have been invited to compete for the honour as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee next year.
Douglas will be considered alongside Peel which has also applied for the status.
"Is it just an excuse to put the rates up?"
The Leader of Douglas Borough Council is Claire Wells:
"Peel, both statistically and culturally, appears to be the most Manx town on the Island."
Although known locally as 'Sunset City' the western town of Peel is yet to be officially recognised as such.
Peel Town Commissioners have also taken up a bid for city status, submitting a 47 page application.
Reverend Nigel Godfrey, the Dean of St German's Cathedral, says they will learn the outcome of their application early next year:

Smile of Mann programme to start in primary schools next year
Loganair passengers yet to be reunited with bags left in Manchester on Sunday
Kirk Michael man taking on 31 marathons in 31 days in memory of friend
