Douglas woman ordered to compensate cops she kicked

50-year-old's behaviour described as 'disgraceful' 

A Douglas woman has been ordered to pay compensation to two police officers she kicked whilst drunk.

Joanna Tiplady, of Fairfield Terrace, struck one of the officers in the neck whilst they were trying to arrest her on 2 July.

They’d been called to an incident by the 50-year-old’s daughter, at a property in Ballasalla, and found her asleep.

When the officers woke her she became abusive and PAVA incapacitant spray had to be used to detain her.  

She later pleaded guilty to provoking behaviour and two offences of assaulting police officers with intent to resist arrest.

During sentencing, at Douglas Courthouse, Tiplady’s advocate told the court the behaviour was ‘out of character’ adding: "Ms Tiplady is very remorseful for her actions."

Imposing an 18-month probation order Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told Tiplady: "Your behaviour was nothing short of disgraceful."

"It’s clear you were very drunk. Your behaviour towards your own family was awful," she added.

Telling Tiplady she had considered a custodial sentence the deputy high bailiff also ordered her to pay £125 in prosecution costs and £500 to each officer she assaulted.
