Drink driver caught hitting road sign on prom

He was more than four times legal limit

A court’s heard police called to stop a drink-driver on Douglas Promenade arrived in time to watch him hit a road sign.

Thirty-five-year-old Martin McDonald of Bemahague Avenue in Onchan appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to drink-driving on 21 September on Queen’s Promenade.

Prosecution advocate Barry Swain said members of the public contacted police after seeing McDonald behind the wheel of his Mercedes.

When officers arrived, McDonald had crashed into a road sign, and they saw he was unsteady on his feet as he got out of his car.

He was arrested and taken to police headquarters, where specialist testing equipment showed he was more than four times the legal limit.

Mrs Hughes asked for probation reports to be prepared and warned McDonald such a high reading might mean a jail term.

She bailed him in the sum of £500 on condition he doesn’t drive, and he’s next due to appear in court on 17 November.
