Driving ban for pensioner who left woman with life-changing injuries

Pulrose woman sentenced by magistrates

A court’s heard how a Douglas pensioner left a woman with life-changing injuries after mounting the pavement and running her over.

Eighty-one-year-old Maureen Janet Stewart, of Hazel Crescent in Pulrose, appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

She pleaded guilty to one count of causing serious bodily harm by driving without due care and attention on Braddan Road on 15 February.

Prosecution advocate Barry Swain told the hearing a caretaker was waiting to cross the road and return to school after lunch when the incident happened.

The court heard a car stopped to let the woman cross but Stewart didn’t notice it had slowed and was forced to swerve suddenly to avoid it.

But as she swerved, her foot hit the accelerator and her Nissan mounted the kerb, hitting the woman.

Mr Swain said the woman, who’d worked at Braddan school for decades, suffered extensive and serious injuries which required treatment in the UK and had left her in a wheelchair.

Magistrates banned Stewart from driving for three years, ordered her to carry 120 hours of community service and pay £50 towards prosecution costs.
