He fathered two calves
Thackery the Tapir, a long-time resident and favourite at Curraghs Wildlife Park has died at the grand age of 32-years-old.
The announcement was made by the park on its Facebook page.
Thackery, was described as a gentle tapir and one of the oldest in Studbook.
Born in 1989 in Dudley Zoo England, the hog-like mammal was moved to the Island, in 2002.
The animal fathered two calves during his lifetime, Zeus and Rio.
According to the post, over the years Thackery spent most of time in a paddock with Zeus.
In their online obituary for the animal, the wildlife park said that a conservation initiative had managed to raise £4,000 to toward a Tapir conservation project run by Patricia Medici, a Brazilian conservationist.
Paying tribute, she said that Tapirs rarely reached the age of 30, so while his passing was no surprise, the Park would always "remember him fondly as a particularly gentle Tapir."
