Dr Arthur Weihe identified the bodies in 1945
The grandson of a man who should have been on-board the flying fortress which crashed on the Island in 1945, has been back to the site of the tragedy.
Dr Arthur Weihe was the medical officer of the squadron to which the bomber, known as Combined Operations belonged.
He missed the flight as he was looking for a parachute when the non-military flight took off from its base in Bedfordshire. It later crashed close to the Chasms, killing all those on-board.
Dr Weihe had to come to the Island to identify the bodies of those killed - many of whom were close personal friends.
Ivor Ramsden from the Manx Aviation Preservation Society says Dr Weihe's grandson, David Janssen, recently came to the Island to make a pilgrimage to the site:
