Employer negotiators don't 'understand' how to negotiate

Prospect Union raises concerns over lack of 'urgency'

Union activity is fast becoming a frequent news topic, with industrial action being announced by the NASUWT recently, and healthcare workers across staging walkouts in long-running disputes over pay and conditions.

Prospect Union operates in the UK and Isle of Man with members in various sectors ranging from the Civil Service all the way to healthcare.

But there are concerns that the people in the negotiating room aren't clued up and don't even know how to negotiate.

Prospect has more than 150,000 members across the UK and nearly 2,500 members on the Isle of Man.

Around November is when the Union begins submitting pay claims to employers on behalf of their members, which is based on data from the UK and Island, collated by the Union's research team.

The length of time negotiations last varies, some ranging from a few weeks, others lasting months all the way to some which are still ongoing nearly a year on.

Local Negotiations Officer Mick Hewer believes this could be resolved if employers felt any form of 'urgency' from the discussions:
