EU deal won't affect us, says minister

Different system means no benefits changes

Treasury Minister Eddie Teare says the UK’s newly-announced benefits deal with the European Union won’t have much of an effect on the Isle of Man.

Today, David Cameron announced child benefit for children living outside the UK would be paid at their home country rates – but Mr Teare says the Treasury only pays child benefit for youngsters who live here.

And new UK restrictions on in-work benefits won’t be implemented on the Island: because we don’t pay benefits until people have qualified as Manx workers after five years.

The deal now paves the way for the UK's referendum on continued membership of the EU on June 23.

Mr Teare says he’s looked at the Prime Minister’s announcement, and doesn’t foresee much of an impact for the Isle of Man:
