Extra medical staff from UK drafted in to help cover MGP

Visitors and residents urged to consider range of support available

Extra medical staff are being drafted in to help alleviate pressure on the Island’s health service over Manx Grand Prix.

It follows the busiest TT on record for the Emergency Department at Noble’s Hospital and the Isle of Man Ambulance Service.

The nine-day Manx Grand Prix Festival returns on Sunday (21 August) and preparations are underway within the health service to cope with additional demand.

Manx Care says during race periods, where there is a substantial increase in visitors on public roads, there is a corresponding increase in people being admitted to Noble’s Hospital.

During TT the Emergency Department had 1,587 attendances – in previous TT periods it was usually around 1,100.

For MGP the medical team there will be joined by three extra nurses and one additional consultant.

Paul Moore is the executive director of nursing and governance:

During TT the Isle of Man Ambulance Service dealt with 710 individual incidents and was supported by seven paramedics from Wales and Guernsey as part of a mutual aid arrangement.

Will Bellamy heads up the service which is welcoming four Welsh paramedics for the upcoming motorsport event:

Manx Care is urging visitors, and residents, to consider the options available when seeking medical attention so that emergency cases can be prioritised at Noble’s Hospital as Paul explains:

Visitors are also being reminded to ensure they have adequate travel and health insurance in place and to bring prescription medication with them.
