Jail after thefts from family firm

Sentencing after £33,700 string of embezzlement

A Peel woman who stole more than £33,000 from her uncle's law firm has been sent to prison.

Fenella Jane Carter, 32, embezzled the money between 2010 and 2011 whilst employed as a bookkeeper by Douglas-based Carters Advocates.

The court heard she'd falsified account statements to cover the outgoings - which were used to purchase and renovate a horse box.

Deemster Rosen gave consideration to Carter's guilty plea, which was made in February, and her obligations as a single mother.

However, labeling the affair an 'unconstrained' and 'serious' act of dishonesty, he sentenced her to 20 months' imprisonment and ordered her to pay £500 costs.
