French Bulldog collected from UK in 'emergency rescue'

A Peel family is trying to raise £3,000 towards surgery for their French Bulldog, Belle.

The rescue struggles to breathe, is at risk of having her larynx collapse, and cannot breathe through her nostrils due to it being 'almost closed'.

Owner Danielle Sloane says they went across to the UK to collect Belle in what was an 'emergency rescue'.

Within hours, they realised something was wrong and took her to the vet.

"We're hoping for the best scenario where she just goes in and she has to have the tissue trimmed, and hopefully she will be able to live the life of a normal dog" - Danielle Sloane

She's told Manx Radio, she just wants the pup to 'live the life of a normal dog':

Juana Warburton, General Manager at the ManxSPCA told Manx Radio: “Short-snouted dogs like French Bulldogs often suffer from breathing and respiratory issues known as Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).

“These types of dogs are becoming more fashionable and, whilst there’s no easy solution, more needs to be done to educate breeders about the health issues these breeds naturally inherit.

“There is demand for these types of dogs, and unfortunately some breeders are responding to that demand by breeding inappropriately (i.e. by choosing very short snouted parents to create puppies with even shorter snouts). We always encourage people to adopt rather than shop in order to reduce the incentive for breeders.

“We’re not about blaming owners at all, especially those who – like in this case – have rescued a dog.”
