Financial aid on way to farmers

More details will be revealed next week about a financial aid package to help Island farmers whose livelihoods have been affected by March’s heavy snow.

A £600,000 programme of support was announced by Agriculture Minister Phil Gawne in May and funds should be distributed next month.

Mr Gawne said he had spoken to a number of farmers and seen the destruction first-hand.

More than 16,000 cattle and sheep died during the snowfall, including many carrying unborn young.

It’s thought around 12 per cent of the national breeding flock and 18 per cent of this year’s lamb crop was lost.
