28-year-old then fled to Jamaica
A Douglas man who dislodged an historic cannon after crashing his car into a roundabout has been fined £1200.
Connor Daniel Beecham, of Head Road, left his Honda Civic marooned on the junction between Lord Street and Parade Street on 2 October.
The 28-year-old then fled the scene and went on holiday to Jamaica.
During an appearance at Douglas Courthouse he admitted driving without due care and attention and failing to stop at, or report, an accident.
The court heard search teams had spent hours trying to locate Beecham due to concerns for his welfare before it transpired he’d left the Island for pre-arranged holiday plans.
Beecham’s advocate told the court it was 'fight or flight' adding: "He has of course acted irresponsibly – he panicked."
Fining him, and ordering him to pay prosecution costs of £50, they told Beecham: "It was an extremely stupid thing to do to leave your vehicle embedded into a roundabout."
The Department of Infrastructure is recovering costs from the Douglas man's insurance.
