Fine for teenager who crashed unroadworthy car

17-year-old's incident described as 'bit of a mystery'

A teenager from Ramsey has been fined £300 after crashing his car on the Mountain Road when his brakes failed.

Adam Fraser Wheeler, of Royal Park, applied his handbrake on 29 September after feeling the brake pedal go ‘squishy’.

The 17-year-old’s car rolled onto its roof and crashed into a hedge at around 9pm – when the vehicle was recovered it was found to have a number of defects.

At Douglas Courthouse Wheeler admitted driving the Mini GT in a dangerous and unroadworthy condition.

His advocate told the court the car had been serviced in April and the tyres and brake pads and discs changed in June adding: "This young man was not aware of the defects."

Ordering Wheeler to pay £50 in prosecution costs, and imposing three penalty points, Magistrates told him the incident was a ‘bit of a mystery’ adding: “On the face of it you’ve done everything you can – your car unfortunately has let you down.”
