Fire and Rescue Service issues advice after e-scooter causes house fire

Douglas crews responded to incident this morning

The Island's Fire and Rescue Service has issued advice to e-scooter owners after it responded to a property fire this morning (21 July).

Douglas crews were called to a house at 6:45am but the occupants had extinguished the fire before officers arrived.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but the service says it's important to remember:

DON'T

  • Don’t charge e bikes or e scooters in bedrooms or where escape routes could be blocked (e.g. hallways or stairwells)
  • Don’t cover chargers or battery packs while charging
  • Don’t overload sockets or use damaged extension leads
  • Don’t charge or store batteries in direct sunlight
  • Don’t charge batteries near combustible materials or hazardous substances
  • Don’t attempt to modify or tamper with the battery

DO

  • Always unplug the charger once charging is complete
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Always use manufacturer approved batteries and chargers
